Inspiration: Back to Basics
You may remember that a couple of months ago, I decided to embark on a challenge of reading through the New Testament in 60 days. As of this past Sunday, I completed that challenge! It was such a great program, in that it allowed me to read the entire New Testament in a short amount of time, but also, within a highly helpful outline that neatly organized it in such a way as to make the task extremely manageable.
I wasn’t necessarily expecting to find inspiration in this challenge. The New Testament is something I’ve been reading for most of my life, and, as such, am highly familiar with. I couldn’t have been more wrong. God’s Word is the only book I know that is totally and utterly alive. It can be new revelation to me each time I read it. I can read the same passage a dozen times, only to find something brand new on the 13th read.
The thing is, that the deeper we go or want to go in our spirituality, the more broken down in terms of distractions we need to become. With this, is a return to basics: more time in Bible reading and in prayer. We can never go wrong by simplifying and returning to a focus on these basic principles. When we feel we’ve grown so spiritual that we are no longer doing these simple things in earnest, we’re most likely missing the point entirely, and not nearly as spiritual as we think.
