Consistency: 2017’s Word of the Year

 In Uncategorized

My dear friend Ida hosts a gathering towards the end of each December. The purpose of it is to challenge the guests to pick a word of focus for the upcoming year. Due to a sick kid, I wasn’t able to attend this year, but I decided to pray about picking a word anyway. In 2016, my word was NOW. I felt like I knew the things I was supposed to be doing, but I just needed to actually do them – now. Having closed out the year with the release of my first book, I’m thrilled that there were at least a few of those “now” items that I was able to accomplish with God’s help.

For 2017, I struggled to come up with a word at first. 2016 was pretty incredible and I didn’t feel any particular pull one way or another. But as I sat and started to make my list of goals for the year, I realized a common theme: CONSISTENCY. I want to read through the Bible in a year again – an issue of consistency. I want to be steady and loving with my husband and children – an issue of consistency. I want to shed a few pounds and get back into a healthy eating and exercise regimen – an issue of consistency. I want to be intentional and faithful about the way I pursue relationships with the women of our church – a matter of consistency. I I want to finish 2 more books that I’m working on – a serious matter of consistency (and caffeine, might I add).

In all these things, I’ve come to realize that I need to be consistent. I can’t start something and not finish it. I can’t give 100% to some things, 50% to some things, and even 0% to other things. I have to be consistent in all I do, and in who I am. As always, I know this isn’t going to work for more than even a day without the help of God. On my own, I’ll be finished with this resolution within minutes of the first disruption to my ideals. But with the gentle guiding of God’s Holy Spirit, and, this is the important part, my allowing that same Holy Spirit a place of prominence in my life, I can do this!

What is your word for 2017? Don’t have one yet? Pray today that God will guide you to one that has meaning for your life. If you do have one, feel free to share it below!
